Postdoc Fellowship: Petrarch Commentary and Exegesis in Renaissance Italy

University of Leeds
Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Cultures
School of Languages, Cultures and Societies

The School of Languages, Cultures and Societies invites applications for one Postdoctoral Research Fellowship to be held from 1 October 2017 to 31 December 2019 within the project Petrarch Commentary and Exegesis in Renaissance Italy (c. 1350-c. 1650), funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council.

The project, led by Prof. Simon Gilson (Warwick), Dr Federica Pich (Leeds) and Dr Guyda Armstrong (Manchester), started in January 2017 and is a collaboration between academic and library staff at Warwick, Leeds, Manchester and the John Rylands Research Institute. We aim to reconstruct the corpus of Italian Petrarch commentary and exegesis and to provide analysis in terms of genres, contents (including paratextual materials), readerships, and contexts in a variety of settings – academies, courts, universities, coteries of scholars, the print shop. The project proposes to create the first freely available on-line census that will offer a searchable catalogue of all the Italian language commentaries and other main kinds of exegesis on Petrarch between 1350 and 1650. The Postdoctoral Research Fellow’s main duty will be to assist alongside the other Postdoctoral Fellow at Warwick in the preparation of the census. Work on the census will be focused in particular upon manuscripts that contain commentaries, lessons and other exegetical material related to Petrarch’s vernacular works. Once work on the census is complete, the successful candidate is expected to undertake research publications related to the analysis of Petrarch exegesis and commentary.

Applicants will be expected to have obtained or expect to shortly obtain a PhD with specialisation in an aspect of Italian Studies or a field relevant to the project. Significant experience of working with manuscripts and early printed books is essential to the job.

The post will be based at the University of Leeds and the Fellow will be expected to take an active role in the overall research life and culture of the School.

Interviews will be held on 8 September 2017.

Salary: £32,004 to £38,183 per annum
